On Writing My First Halloween Poem

On Writing My First Halloween Poem

On Halloween I went to bed
but thoughts kept oozing through my head,
and so I stayed awake all night
to write a poem by candlelight.

The shadows on the wall did creep,
like demons thwarting me from sleep.
With pounding heart I sat upright
and wrote the poem by candlelight.

It seemed each flutter of the flame
flicked images too weird to name.
With trembling hand I dared to write
and wrote the poem by candlelight.

The wind was like an eerie moan
that chilled my flesh, my soul, my bone,
but bravely I embraced my fright
and wrote the poem by candlelight.
