DRUMMER'S LOVE SONG

He played upon his shiny drum
and sang love songs tenderly;
with starlit eyes she smiled at him
with love that all could see.

He sang his songs with velvet voice,
and oh, how she did feel!
The love that grew inside her heart
she knew was very real.

She came to hear him every night,
and soon he loved her too;
then after hours they'd slip away
to do what lovers do.

Finality she heard one night
in each beat of his drum.
To her he sang a farewell song;
with him she could not come.

Another job had summoned him,
quite different from before;
it was not about his music --
this time the gig was war.

Now every night she sits alone
and gazes into space,
his image clear inside her mind
which she cannot erase.

She prays that he'll come safely back
and play upon his drum
and sing a special song to her,
then she won't feel alone.

Until he does, she'll wait for him
with feelings that are glum,
her heart in sadness beating
to the rhythm of his drum.
